About Henry Foreman
New Zealand Herald, Volume XIX, Issue 6425, 21 June 1882. THE LATE TRAGEDY IN CHAPEL-STREET. CORONER'S INQUEST. A CORONER'S Inquest was held yesterday at the Alexandra Hotel, Chapel-street, before Dr. Philson and jury, on the body of Henry Foreman, who shot himself with his rifle on Monday morning. Sergeant Gamble represented the police authorities. The jury (of whom Captain Loverock was foreman) having been duly sworn, proceeded to the deceased's residence to view the body, after which the following evidence was adduced: - Mary Foreman deposed that she was the widow of the deceased, Henry Foreman. She narrated the circumstances which led up to the fatel quarrel - his illness with the measles, her meeting with Doolan on Sunday night, her husband finding her with Doolan and knocking her down in the street, and his subsequent chastisement of her when they got back home, in almost identical terms published in yesterday's issue. The only new points were in the following evidence: - Her husband was a very jealous man, and had been so from the outset of there marriage. When she met Doolan it was wholly accidental, there was no appointment. Could not say whether he was looking out for her. Her husband was very hot-tempered, but of sober habits, and she had never seen him in liquor. Had not given her husband any occasion for jealousy. She had kept company of Doolan about four years ago. Her husband was jealous of Doolan as he had heard he had returned from the bush. Her husband had not accused her of any impropriety with Doolan or anyone else. etc. etc. etc.
After a couple of minutes consideration, the jury brought in a verdict to the effect the deceased, Henry Foreman, commited suicide while in a state of temporary insanity caused by a combined attack of measles and jealousy.
