About Henry Goble

The HENRY GOBLE TREE Compiled by George Goble July 1924

"Nothing is known of Henry Goble, the progenitor of the Goble family in Indiana, except that he lived in New Jersey. His two sons, Benoni and Abner, emigrated from New Jersey early in the nineteenth century. They first went to Pennsylvania, where they married Sarah and Elizabeth (CORRECTION: LYDIA) Johnson, sisters. From there they pushed westward to Cotton Run Butler County, Ohio, but they made that their home for only a brief time and in the year of 1833 they came across the state line into Union County, Indiana, where they preemted a half a section of land. Here the two brothers raised their families and lived the balance of their lives, Benoni dying at the ripe old age of 92, and Abner being killed by a falling tree at the age of 67. They are both buried in the Bethlehem Cemetery, Franklin County, Indiana.

It seems true that Benoni and Abner had several other brothers, who came west from New Jersey. A brother, Jacob, settled near Knightstown, Indiana and it is supposed that the Gobles near Knightstown and Greenfield, Indiana are descendant of Jacob. Another brother is buried in a cemetery which formerly occupied the site of the present courthouse of Hamilton County, Ohio. Nothing is known of his descendants. It is also said there was another brother by the name of George, who settled, lived and died near Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana and still another brother, Levi, who while a boy living in New Jersey had both feet burned off. He died at the age of 10 or 12.
Upon the death of Abner Goble the land on which he had preempted went to his son, Henry Washington. Upon this tract of land, Henry Washington Goble was born and there he lived all his life, a period of 87 years
This family tree, which the writer has worked upon at intervals for a period of ten years, or more, gives all that is known as to names, dates of birth and death, places of residence and the marriages of the descendants of Benoni and Abner Goble. Some of them have gone to parts unknown, and information concerning them, therefore could not be had. But as it is, the tree contains approximately 700 names, of whom 500 are descendants of the two brothers.
The vocations are not stated, but the greater portion (perhaps 75%) were or are farmers. Others are mechanics and laborers. Still a smaller number are or have been teachers. Three are preachers, and two are laywers. As many as 5 are now teachers in college or universities."

Henry Goble served in the Revolution.
Henry Goble married Lydia Conger Dec. 11, 1765. [marriage record of the 1st Presbyterian Church, Morristown, New Jersey].
