I graduated from Cornell University in the class of 1906, having specialized in medieval German dialects. I taught German until WWI necessitated my switching to Spanish and changing the family name from Greenberg to Greene, as Germanic names were clearly not in favor. I taught languages for forty-eight years, forced to retire at age 70 from the New York City school system. My love of music included participating in a string quartet which met at my home in Brooklyn. I collected various musical instruments and dabbled at playing them, including a soprano saxophone which my grandson, Michael, still has.
