Biography

Henry was born in 1594.

Henry Haggett was an English immigrant who settled in Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts, serving as his town's constable.

Records for Henry are confusing and vary greatly. Some sites state that Henry was married just once… others say he had two wives. Most sites say that Henry married Ann UNKNOWN in 1644 in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts. But if birth records are accurate for their five children, four of them were born before their marriage date.

The two oldest boys, Henry (1637) and Moses (1639) would have been born before Henry left England.

It would be so much "simpler" if we assume the marriage date and location are incorrect and that Henry and Ann were married in England, in about 1635, before immigrating together with their young children. We are going to "go with this scenario" with the caveat that it might be inaccurate.

MARRIAGE

Henry married Ann (Surname Unknown) in about 1644 in Suffolk, England. He would have been 51 years old at that time; Ann would have been only 21. Ann was born in 1623 in Suffolk, England.

CHILDREN

Henry and Ann were the parents of five children; two sons and three daughters. They were:

Henry Haggett 1637
Moses Haggett 1639
Mary Haggett 1641
Deliverance 1643
Hannah 1645-1693
IMMIGRATION

Henry (and his family ?) left England and immigrated to New England, arriving in Massachusetts "sometime before 1640." He is known to have settled in Windham (Ipswich), Essex County, Massachusetts as early as 1644.

The only records found on Henry and Ann's life in Ipswich make for a charming story: Henry served as a constable for the town. Ann appears to have had a "lively temperament" as she was in court for various reasons in 1644, 1648, and 1649. We do not know further details.

DEATH

Henry and Ann passed away in consecutive years.

Henry died on January 24, 1677, at his home in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts. He lived 83 years.

Ann Haggett died the following year, 1678, also at her home in Ipswich. She was only 55 years old at the time of her death.

He was at one time a constable of the town and appears frequently in the tax lists. At a court held in Salem, April 24, 1651 he was discharged from training “on account of infirmity”. Later was freed from training “without payment for time to come”.
His wife, Ann, appears to have been a lively temperament as she was in court for various reasons in 1644, 1648, 1649. She was living at the date of her husband‘s will.”
