OBITUARY

MR. H. R. HODGKINSON.

The death of Mr. Henry Richard Hodgkinson occurred at his home, "Netherburn," Crookhaven, Pyree. early on Sunday morning last, at the patriarchal age of 85 years.

He was native of this district, born at what was then known as Cook's Wharf, Numba. and later went with his par ents to Forest Lodge, Meroo.

Growing to manhood he the employ of the late Mr. John Mc Arthur, store keeper, Terara. Later he married Miss Fleming, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Fleming, of Crookhaven, and entered business, succcessfully con ducting the leading store, in the early days of the town, in Moss Street, near the Empire Hotel.

He was noted for his leniency in not pressing customers who appealed for their ac counts to remain in abeyance, and for that trait of character never collected much money due to him. Close to the shop he huilt what was considered one of the most modern homes, and it was there where their children were born.

The late Mr. Jas. Shepherd was his leading hand in conducting the business from which he retired several decades ago and went farm ing to Crookhaven where his son, Mr. Allen Hodgkinson, now owns the pro perty. which is one of the most, snug and modernly equipped dairy farms in the district."

For many years Dr. Matthews, prior to leaving Nowra and going to Ireland, resided opposite Mr. Hodgkinson's in Moss-street, and they were inseparable friends, their homes, in those days, being landmarks of the town.

The late Mr .Hodgkin son was one of the leading citizens of the town, taking an active interest in matters pertaining to the welfare of the district. Another old friend was the late Mr. Walter Armstrong, both of whom took a keen and active inter est in the old Nowra Rifle Club.

His wife predeceased him many years ago. He leaves in family two sons and three daughters, viz.. Mary (Mrs. Taylor, Waroo Station. (Yass); Dr. Harry Hodgkinson. practising at Or ange; Margaret (Mrs. F. Morison. of Nowra); Ethel (Mrs. H. .Jones, of Castle Hill. Sydney), and Allen ( pre viously mentioned ) .

The interment, took place in the Presbyterian portion of the Nowra public cemetery on Mon day, the last sad rites at the grave side being conducted bv the Rev. J. H. G. Auld , B.A.
