Following the death of their two sisters in 1835 and 1838, half-brother Charles left for New Zealand/Tasmania in 1842. This was shortly followed by their father's death in 1844.

ARMY SERVICE

"To be Ensigns without purchase, Henry Alestair Bolton Mackenzie(formerly of 93rd Foot), Gent. vice Wemyss, promoted in 32d(Cornwall) Foot. Dated 14th April 1846"

Henry married later that year in Ireland, in November 1846.

EMIGRATION(1851)

Henry left England almost as soon as his first child was born. He arrived in Tasmania, Australia(formerly known as Van Diemen's Land), in January 1851 and would have left four months earlier. He arrives into Launceston, where his half brother is living, with 'Catherine Mackenzie'(aka Caroline). Their daughter stays in England and features on the 1851 census.

They presumably arrived on invitation or recommendation from half-brother Major Charles Ross MacKenzie, who had already emigrated to Tasmania in 1842, and owned 66 acres of land. A month after their arrival, in February 1951, the first goldrush of Australia begins so this wasn't an incentive for their emigration but Henry Snr is noted as 'Gold Digger' in , but also noted as Clerk and Storeman on other registrations before and after.

By 1852 and around that time he was applying for a Civil Servants position in the Government, saying he had been a Lt. in the army (past tense). I have not yet found an entry in the London Gazette advising of his promotion from ensign to Lt - Kirsty Rickett via emails from Louise Philp.

Four of the five children that Henry and Caroline had in Tasmania died within days or months of being born with only Thomas surviving.

In 1872, Henry is noted as living in Fingal, Hobart where he later dies in 1876.
