About Henry McKay
- Reference: MyHeritage Family Trees - SmartCopy: Mar 10 2017, 4:10:21 UTC
Henry McKay was born at Fort EIIice on June 25, 1856 and died at Grand Rapids, Man. on February 21, 1936. He married Ellen Inkster at Fort Ellice on August 29, 1881, and they had eleven children. Their oldest son, Valentine, wrote many historical stories for Winnipeg Newspapers.
Henry joined the Hudsons Bay Company at Fort Ellice under D.F. Archie MacDonald. Later he served at Qu'Appelle, Pelican Narrows and The Pas. After retirement he made his home at Grand Rapids.
Henry was a marvellous recantour. I can remember being facinated by his stories when he visited our home. He was an ardent Conservative and though he never ran for office he was quite influential in the Grand Rapids - The Panarama. He was fluent in Cree and Saulteux and learned Sioux. I have heard it said that he had a weakness for alcoholic beverages, and that was one reason why he never sought public office.
