THE HONOURABLE JAMES MCKAY, KC., BA.

Lawyer, Judge and Politician. Justice of the Supreme Court of Saskatchewan, 1914-18; Justice of the Saskatchewan Court of King's Bench. 1918-21; Justice of the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal, 1921-32. Justice McKay was the first judge of Aboriginal ancestry to be appointed to the Court. He represented Prince Albert in the Canadian House of Commons from 1911 intil 1914. He was Chancellor of Emmanuel College when it was located in Prince Albert, and he was appointed a member of the first Board of Governors of the University of Saskatchewan in 1907. He remained on the Board for 23 years, until his death in December 1931

James McKay is the son of William McKay and his wife Mary Cook, He was born on 12 July 1862, at Fort Ellice in present-day Manitoba. He was educated at Westbourne and at St. John's College at the University of Manitoba. While at St. John's, he won, in 1877, the Dufferin Bronze Medal for Ancient and Modern History. McKay articled in law and was called to the Manitoba bar in 1886. McKay practised law in Winnipeg and, after 1887, in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. He was a crown prosecutor from 1888 to 1897. In 1891, he was named King's Counsel. McKay was an unsuccessful candidate for the Saskatchewan (Provisional District) seat in the House of Commons in 1896, losing to Wilfrid Laurier, and also ran unsuccessfully in Prince Albert in 1908 before taking the seat in the 1911 federal election. McKay resigned his seat in the House of Commons in 1914 after he was named to the Supreme Court of Saskatchewan. In 1918, he was named to the Court of King's Bench and, in 1921, to the Court of Appeal for Saskatchewan. North-West Rebellion

James McKay temporarily left his articles to serve as a soldier during the Riel Rebellion of 1885. He was involved in battles at Fish Creek and Batoche.
