About Henry Nickerson USLSS
"Fatal accident.-- Friday afternoon, Mr. Henry Nickerson, a member of the crew of Life Saving Station 14, while at work on the Italian bark Papa Luigi C., fell from the maintopsail yard of the vessel to the deck, striking upon his head, crushing in his skull and killing himself almost instantly. As far as we can learn, he was cutting away a portion of the rigging when he severed a rope by which he was held, letting him fall headlong to the deck. Mr. Nickerson was about 35 years of age, and was a native of Harwich. He leaves a widow and two young children. He was a man highly esteemed by his comrades at the station, and had a large circle of friends in town, over whom the accident has cast a deep feeling of sadness. He was a member of Nantucket Lodge, No. 66, IOOF, of this place. [Nantucket Mirror."
