About Henry Sandys, Esq., of Culworth

Henry Sandys, eighth child of Archbishop Edwin Sandys and Cecily Willford, was born on Sept. 30, 1572 in Berkshire. He married Priscilla Chauncey of Northamptonshire, mentioned in the Second Charter of Virginia.

Biography

Plumpton Northamptonshire (or Northants) is about three miles north-east of Culworth and of Sulgrave which themselves are north-east of Banbury.

Henry Sandys was the 6th son of Bishop Edwyn Sandys, born in 1572 when Edwyn was Bishop of London and therefore most likely at either of the Bishop's residences in London.

These were Fulham Place and Barnards Castle (near St Pauls Cathedral).

In about 1602, this Henry Sandys married Priscilla Chauncy a daughter of Sir Toby Chauncy of Edgcote Northants. Edgcote is a short distance west of Culworth and of Sulgrave. There was a battle there in 1469. Henry Sandys and Priscilla settled at Culworth and had two known sons there. Edwyn born c1604 and Chauncy born 1606.

Henry died sometime between 1609 when he witnessed Sir Toby's Will and 1621 when Chauncy went up to study at Cambridge.

Edwyn continued at Edgcote and through his influence his cousin Robert Sandys became Rector of Boddington (about five miles north-west of Culworth) in c1628.

Robert was born in London in 1601 and was the first son of Thomas Sandys who was the fifth son of Bishop Edwyn. Robert married Alice Washington who was a daughter of Lawrence Washington of Sulgrave

Traditionally, James Sands has been asserted to be the son of the Archbishop's eigth child by his second marriage, Henry Sandys. This theory is problematic because James is believed to have been from County Berkshire, and Henry settled with his second wife, Priscila Chauncy, in County Northamptonshire, where he became Sherrif. According to Cambridge's records, at the time his son, Chauncy, enrolled at Cambridge, in 1621, Henry was already dead.

From Cokayne, George Edward. Complete baronetage, 1611-1880. (Exeter [England]: W. Pollard, 1900-1906), 1:180. Sir John Wake, 2nd Bt., married Bridget Sandy, daughter of Henry Sandys, of Plumpton

from Postem

The Reverend Henry Sands who died in Boxforde (near Groton), Suffolk on Nov 9 1626 was born in 1549 according to his tomb.

The Henry Sandys of Northamptonshire who was the son of Archbishop Edwin Sandys and Cicely Wilford was born in 1572 and was dead by 1621, the year his son Chauncey entered Cambridge University according to the school’s records.

They were possibly the parents of Capt. James Sands (1621-1695) who married Sarah Walker. Their children were John, James, Samuel, Edward, Sarah and Mercy.
