Sanford, with his wife, mother and brother, moved from Greenville District, SC to East Tennessee in 1832, and in 1835 to Turkeytown, Cherokee County, Alabama. Henry and his brother ran a trading post in the Gaylesville area of what was Cherokee land at the time. Henry has been called "one of the first settlers of Cherokee County". After a short stay, Henry, his wife and mother and five daughters returned to Tennessee, where he taught school and became a Methodist Minister. In 1850, Henry returned to Cherokee County, Alabama and resided next to his brother, Lemuel J. Sanford in the southern part of the county near a spring which bears the family name (Sanford Springs). In 1853, Henry received Bounty Land (Military Act, 1852) in Cherokee County. In 1854, the first public schools were established in Alabama, Henry "was the first chairman of the Cherokee County Board of Education and the first superintendent of education". Cherokee County, Alabama census records (1850/1860/1870/1880) variously list Henry's occupation as Mill Wright, Methodist clergy, Senator and farmer. There is some confusion regarding Henry's children, due to the names of his children are shown differently in various sources. It is suggested that Henry had nine children by Mary and one, possibly two by Harriet, no children by third wife. Children of henry and Mary wer Leila P., Luvina Eloy, Lumina E., Lucina S. Lucila Safrona, Lemuel Dayden, Looney Long, Luminta or Lumintia and Luminney or Luviney. Children by Henry and Harriet were Henry Bascum and possibly Russell submitted by Lydia Pearl Sanford Hulsey, 503 Cedartown Hwy., Piedmont, AL. 36272
