Funeral services were held here last Friday for Henry Segal, for 55 years editor and publisher of The American Israelite, the oldest American Jewish weekly in the United States. He died last Thursday at the Glen Manor Home for the Aged in Cincinnati. He was 84 years old.
Born in Chillicothe, Ohio, Segal graduated from Ohio State University in 1922 and again in 1923 with degrees in Liberal Arts and Journalism. He worked for a brief period as a reporter for the Akron Press and came to Cincinnati in 1923 to join the staff of the Cincinnati Post where he served as copyeditor, assistant city editor and assistant managing editor until 1928 when he became managing editor of the Israelite.
In 1930, Segal became the Israelite’s editor and publisher. He retired from the paper in December, 1982. He was also a part-time correspondent for The New York Times for some 30 years and taught journalism at the University of Cincinnati.
Segal was also active in community activities throughout his career. In the early 1930’s, he was a founder of the Jewish Community Center here and later a founder of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Cincinnati. He served on the Boards of both organizations for many years and on the advisory board of the Big Brothers association here and on the Boards of Rockdale Temple and former United Jewish Social Agencies here, His brother is Robert Segal, former head of the Jewish Community Council of Greater Boston and long-time columnist for the World News Service/Seven Arts Feature Syndicate.
