About Henry Sewell, III
The progenitor of the Sewells in the Georgia Piedmont in the nineteenth century is thought to have been one Henry Sewell (c. 1604 - 1646/47). He appears to have been born somewhere in the English Midlands, probably in the first decade of the seventeenth century. Henry came from England with his older brother, Thomas, in 1619, aboard the "George" and settled at Sewell's Point, Virginia (1626-1632) at a landing on "Fleur-de-Hundred" (Thomas Sewell's land).
There is an accounting record dated 1638 from Henry Jr.'s father in London, England, of tobacco being sent from Henry Jr. in the ships "America" and "Alexandria" containing sassafras roots that were to be sold in England. The cash receipts totalled 650 pounds, 19 shillings and 6d (about $35,000 in 1955 currency).
Henry Jr. emigrated to the new Virginia colony by about 1630 and settled on the eastern shore of the Elizabeth River as it empties into the James River just west of Cape Henry. The original Jamestown colonists had first landed nearby in 1607, but, as instructed, they soon sailed forty or fifty miles further up the James to found their new colony. As the colony at Jamestown established itself, settlers began populating the rest of the Tidewater, and among them was Henry Sewell, who gave his name to the point of land between Willoughby Bay on the east and the Elizabeth River on the west.
Henry was still in Maryland on 16 Oct 1732. He inherited twenty five(25) acres of Howard and Porter's Range. He later migrated to North Carolina and his sons moved on to Georgia in the 1800's and established the Sewell line in that state. Samuel, Sr. was born at the family seat on the Severn River called "Howard's and Porter's Range. Enochville is also known as Saulsbury.
Henry's father, Henry II, was a tobacco planter. He was making surveys on the Severn Riverin Maryland in 1661 and settled there on 8 Aug 1664. In 1680,(patents 7, folio 343 at the land office, Annapolis, Anne Arundel, MD) he was granted a 537 acre tract lying on the north side of the Severn River, in Saint Margaret's Westminster Parish and here at Sewell's Cove, he made his home and called it "Sewell's Increase". It was later called "Henry's Increased". His will was dated 29 Sep 1691; but was not probated until 5 Dec 1700, over nine (9) years following his death. His death date has been shown a 29 Sep 1621 (unlikely), 1662(possible, but not likely)
Henry and Elizabeth Sewell must have been relatively prosperous, and by the time he died in November 1699, he owned at least 1,400 acres of land around the upper Severn River northwest of Annapolis. How much of this was cultivated in tobacco isn’t known, although it is almost certain to have been as much as he could grow. http://www.tomitronics.com/the%20gene%20pool/sewell/index.html
