From The Greater Tallman Family Newsletter No. 16, 1988 pg.1:
"We begin our visit to New England on Nov. 18, 1650 when 'Peter Tallman of Newport, RI, Apothecary' gave power of attorney to a Mr. John Elton. Soon after May 1650, he moved to Portsmouth where he was a landowner and merchant. He was made a freeman there in 1655. He had a sailing clearance from Newton, Long Island for South River, DE dated June 27, 1651. He was one of the early purchasers of land in Martha's Vineyard. He appears also in the CT Records on 20 May 1652 when he was called 'Dutchman. He understood the low German language and was an interpreter (Colonial Records of CT, Vol. I, pg 231). He bought lands from the Indians within the bounds of Plymouth Colony (Plymouth Colony Records, Vol.5, page 151). He was also for some time at Flushing, Long Island. Between 1655-1658 his name is frequently found in the Court Records of New Amsterdam where he acted as an interpreter between the English and Dutch (Records of New Amsterdam 1653-1674 Vols. I & II). He purchased much land at Dartmouth, MA. and the neighboring towns, but his principal place of residence was Portsmouth, RI. In 1658 he bought land in Portsmouth of Robert Morris. In 1661 he was Commissioner of Portsmouth and Warwick, RI. In 1661 he was a member of the General Court. This Peter Tallmann was born about 1623 in Hamburg, Germany. He died in 1708 and is buried at Portsmouth, RI." from "The Descendants of Peter Tallman" by Elmer W. Tallman of Mount Vernon, Iowa June 30, 1940.
Also from same page of Tallman Newsletter Joseph Sheffield testified that, being in the house of Peter Tallman in Portsmouth, RI, Mar 13, 1702, Peter declared:
"I am now eighty years of age and in the year 1674,I came from Hambourgh to the island of Barbados in the West Indies, and within two years after my arrival, I married Ann Hill, the daughter of Philip Hill and Ann, his wife.""He was married in Christ Church Parish on said island and seven or eight months after his marriage moved from Barbados to RI, bringing his wife and his wife's brother, called Robert Hill, as likewise his wife's mother and father, said Tallman declared to me that the Peter Tallman whose habitat is now at Guilford in the county of New Haven, Connecticut, is his eldest lawful son."

"Peter Talman of Newport on Roade Iland Apothecary," he gave a power of attorney to "my welbeloved frend Mr. John Elton" to collect what was due to him from "Mr. Samuel Maverick of Noddles Iland in the Massachusetts gent." and "to take upp & seaze uppon a Negro man of mine which I am informed is within the jurisdiction of the Massachusetts. The Negro is named Mingoe & but a yong man & having the marke of I:P on his left shoulder: & did unlawfully depart from my house in Newport about six months since." (Aspinwal Notarial Records, pp. 370- 371, entered under date of (12) 1650 (5 Feb. 1650/51). He had, therefore arrived in Newport at least as early as May 1650. Soon, however, then moved to Portsmouth, R.I., where he was a landowner and merchant and was a freeman in 1655. He was one of the earliest purchasers of land on Martha's Vineyard, and was very active in the settlement of that island. (Cf. Bank's History of Martha's Vineyard.) He appears also in the Connecticut record on 20 May 1652, when he is called "Dutchman." (Colonial Records of Connecticut, vol. 1, p. 231.) He bought lands from the Indians within the bounds of the Plymouth Colony (Plymouth Colony Records, vol. 6, p. 151.), and was apparently for some time at Flushing, on Long Island. From 1655 to 1656 his name is frequently found in the court records of New Amsterdam, where he sometimes acted as interpreter between the English and the Dutch. (Records of New Amsterdam 1653-1674, vols. 1 and 2.) He purchased much land in Dartmouth, Mass., and the neighboring towns, but his principal place of residence was Portsmouth, R.I. His estate was settled on May 8, 1709.
