HENRY DeHaven, former burgess, druggist dies
Former West Chester burgess Henry V. DeHaven, of Friends Hall, West Chester, died today in Chester County Hospital, West Chester, after a brief illness. He was 87, and the husband of Florence Shriver DeHaven.
A Long-time resident of West Chester, Mr. DeHaven was a pharmacist and owner of DeHaven's Drug Store in West Chester until his retirement in 1954.
He was also a charter member and past president of Chester County Federal Savings and Loan Association, and past president of West Chester Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce.
He served a four-year term as burgess of West Chester, beginning in 1954.
Mr. DeHaven was born in Gwynned Township, Montgomery County, a son of the late James and Anna Snyder DeHaven. He was a graduate of Lansdale High School, Perkiomen Seminary and Philadelphia College of Pharmacy in 1910.
He was employed with Kuhn's Drug Store in Lansdale, and later with George B. Evans Prescription Department in Philadelphia, where he worked until 1916. He later obtained a Master Pharmacist degree from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy.
He opened his West Chester drug store in 1916, and a branch store at 322 S. High St. in 1928. He served as director and vice-president of Philadelphia Wholesale Drug Co., and was past president of Pennsylvania Pharmaceutical Association.
He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in West Chester, and served as a church elder. He was also a member of West Chester Lodge 322 F&AM for 56 years, and was an honorary member of West Chester Fire Co.
In addition to his wife, Mr. DeHaven is survived by three daughters, Dorothy, wife of George V. Terry, Jr. of Lombard, Ill.; Ruth, wife of Severn T. Willis of Wilmington, Del.; and Virginia, wife of John H. Mulliner of Kenilworth, Ill.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Sevices will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with interment in Oaklands Cemetery.
