About Henry Eugene Wellman
RESEARCH_NOTES: The following is from a note from Fred Wellman (harehaven@hotmail.com) explaining the confusion about who Henry Eugene's father is:
Augusta married George Sparrell first and moved to Montana the same time Augusta family moves to Salt Lake City. At some point Augusta had a falling out with George Sparrell and he sent her packing. Augusta joined her Father and Mother in Salt Lake around 1865/68. In 1872 I find she had a son by Mr. Henry Hoskins (Nov. 27, 1872). In 1880 my grandfather (Henry Hoskins) is living with his grandparents and an aunt under the name of Henry Eugene Wellmann.
In 1880 I found Augusta listed as wife to Henry Wellmann, a barber in Bingham, Utah. And in a will of her father she is listed as living in Stockton, CA. With Henry Wellmann.
The story that my grandfather told his family was his real father was looking for gold and was killed by Mexican’s in Ca. My family never knew his real name until I started checking the records in Salt Lake.
My grandfather died on Aug 20, 1950, in Barstow, Ca. He was born Eugene Piggott Hoskins to Henry Hoskins and Augusta Hull Piggott. Henry Hoskins died Dec 11, 1879 in Salt Lake City and is buried in Salt Lake City. When Henry Hoskins died Augusta change my grandfathers name to Henry Eugene Wellmann. He in turn dropped the last N sometime around 1916.
Henry Hoskins is laid to rest with his three other wives’s and at his feet is Augusta and all her family. (All in the same plot)
Henry Hoskins was in the Mormon Battalion and was part of the volunteers who marched to Ca. And then on to northern Ca. Looking for gold. That is were my family got the story of my grandfather looking for gold and was not killed by any Mexican’s. He just didn’t what his family to know about the escapades of his mother.
