Television Producer. He was six-time Emmy winner who was also a past president of the Writers Guild of America East. He worked over 20 years at the NBC comedy "Saturday Night Live" after working at the "Tonight" show with Steve Allen and with Johnny Carson. He helped make SNL a hit by shaping such skits as "Weekend Update," a news parody. The Tonight Show veteran brought credibility to Lorne Michaels' troupe of upstart comedians, whom Sargent had dubbed the Not Ready for Prime Time Players. Born in Phildelphis and raised in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania he studied architecture at Penn State before joining the U.S. Army. During World War II, he served in New Guinea with the Air Transport Command of the U.S. Army Air Corps. Cause of death: heart attack, in New York City.
