Death reported in "The Courier Mail" of Monday 27 September 1954:
"CRUSHED TO DEATH
SARINA — A man was drawn into an elevator and crushed to death at a sugar mill here yesterday. He was Herbert Edward Jackes, 47, married, of Sarina. The accident occurred about 9.30 am, while Jackes was carrying out maintenance work at the Plane Creek Sugar Mill. Jackes was working under the lower end of an elevator while another em ployee was working on the top. Police were told that Jackes apparently did not hear a warning that the elevator was to be started. His head and shoulders were drawn in and he was killed instantly."
also in "The Argus" of Monday 27 September 1954:
"Worker killed in mill lift Brisbane, Sunday Herbert Edward Jackes. 47, married, of Sarina, was drawn into a lift and crushed to death at a Sarina sugar mill today. Jackes was on maintenance work and apparently did not hear the warning that the lift was to be started."
