About Herbert Mann

Herbert Mann, 86, beloved husband of Muriel Plotkin Mann, died on January 17, 2011 at Connecticut Hospice of Branford. He was born on June 5, 1924 in Germany. The son of Luise and Eduard Mann, Herb emigrated to the United States through a synagogue led program shortly after his 13th birthday. He always was fiercely proud to be an American citizen and he fought in Patton's Army and was a veteran of World War II. After the war, Herb was invited to the White House as part of a UJA Appeal for Refugees delegation to meet with President Truman. Family was always paramount to Herb as he found his siblings and father shortly after the war and brought them to live in Maryland. Herb worked his way up from grocery bagger to Branch Manager, New England for Food Fair/Pantry Pride Supermarkets and then with his wife, successfully opened and ran several of his own independent supermarkets in New Jersey and Connecticut. Herb was an active participant at the Jewish Community Center and enjoyed being a member of the Honorable Menschen Club. He was a member of Congregation B'nai Israel in Bridgeport, CT. Herb had many passions but his family was his greatest love. He was an avid reader, bike rider and card player.

Herb and Muriel were married for 56 wonderful years, they have two daughters Luise and her husband, Edward Burger of Easton, CT, and Eileen and her husband Dene Dobensky of Glastonbury, CT, in addition adoring grandchildren, Marc Rottman, Rachel and Alexander Dobensky and step-grandchildren, Allison and Daniel Burger. Herb had four siblings, Hilde Simenauer of Chevy Chase, Maryland and Henry Mann of Baltimore, Maryland and was predeceased by Manford and Joseph Mann.
