About Pte. Herbert Hamilton McKechnie
Herbert Hamilton McKechnie was born at Mataura in Southland, New Zealand, on 20 January 1891. His parents were James McKechnie and Jane Hamilton McKechnie (nee Dawson) who had married in Dunedin on 10 May 1873. During World War I Herbert served with the Otago Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion. He was at Gallipoli where he was wounded. Herbert was killed in action at Bapaume in France on 15 August 1918. He is remembered on the Grévillers New Zealand Memorial. His brother Graham Dawson McKechnie had served with the New Zealand Mounted Rifles, 4th Contingent during the Anglo Boer War (1899-1902). His brother John McKechnie was killed in action at Ypres on 12 October 1917. Another brother Archibald McKechnie died on 26 November 1918 during the 1918 Influenza Pandemic whilst on leave from the Trentham Military Training Camp.
