About Herbert Patterson

World War I draft papers have him having brown eyes and hair, being tall with medium build. Working for his dad on the farm.

Transcipt of letter to Herbert when he was in World War 1 from his sister Sadie. Some of it is hard to read and I am unsure about some of the words and I tried to keep the grammer and spelling true to the letter. Kristin

Letter to Herbert M Patterson from his sister Sadie. Germania Iowa 11/14/1918. My dear brother, Your letter rec’d today, we were all pleased to hear from you and to know that you are feeling well. We are all well. I washed this forenoon and ironed most of the clothes this afternoon. So I almost too tired to write. We have been picking corn most every day since school was closed. We had a great deal of rain, so that hindered somewhat. The fields are quite wet yet. Keuhlers began picking here today with two teams. They picked about 160 bushels, it won’t take long at that rate. Dad is paying them 9 cts a bushel. A person can sure earn a good day’s wages picking corn. Yes we recd five pictures from you. We liked the one where you were sitting down the best. You look rather skinny where you are standing alone. You and your pal look a little bit alike on one picture. We got your number? too its hanging up on the wall. You can imagine how glad we all were to hear that the war was ended. We all went thru the house like we were crazy. The people around here sure did some celebrating. You couldn’t hear anything but shouting and bells ringing all day long. In B. C. (Buffalo Center?) they had a bon fire and burnt the Kaiser and his 6 sons in effigy. Just pretended you know. Would have been if the real person wouldn’t it? Now maybe you’ll be home soon. My! I hope so. We’ll let you sleep for a week when you come home. PS Bert says he’ll write you a dickens of a big long letter some of these nights when he is not so tired. Write soon. Do you think you’ll be home for Christmas? Wouldn't that be grand? We think Dave might be here by that time. We heard from him yesterday. He doesn’t seem to be doing anything. Well Herby try to be as cheerful as you can. You’ll get home now or at least sooner. I don’t see why you have to stay when the war is over. Must go to bed. With love. Your sis Sadie.
