Biographical Account
Born in Epworth, England in 1903, son of Herbert J. Shipley (1870-1960) and Emma Jane Shipley (1868-1952), he came to Birtle with his mother in 1912, joining his father who had arrived the previous year. In 1915, they moved to Rossburn and, in 1922, to Russell where he helped his father to run auctioneering, butchering, bailiff, and farming businesses. In 1935, he began working part-time with the Canadian Farm Loan Board which, in 1942, began full-time work when he was appointed an inspector for the Trust and Loan Company of Canada, which later joined the Canada Permanent Trust Company. He was an authority on land values and an advocate of better farming practices. On 30 December 1930, he married Edna Jane Iverach (1907-2001, daughter of William Iverach, teacher at Patterson School in 1926-1927) at Miniota. They had two children: Kenneth Gary Shipley and Sheila Joan Shipley. He died at Winnipeg on 27 March 1977. In 1978, he was inducted posthumously into the Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame. Memorable Manitobans: Herbert Rowland Shipley
