Straus Historical Society
Herbert Nathan Straus was the youngest boy, the sixth child of Isidor and Ida Straus. He was born in 1881 in New York City. On July 15, 1907, he married Cincinnati, OH native, Therese Kuhn, daughter of Edward and Millie Kuhn. They had three sons: Edward Kuhn, Oliver Herbert and John Wendell Straus.
The couple maintained an apartment in New York City and, in 1908, bought a large estate in Middletown, NJ. Herbert's brother Percy and his wife Edith Abraham Straus bought the neighboring estate.
By 1930 Herbert was vice president of the family owned firm, R. H. Macy & Company and president of the newly acquired New Jersey department Store, Bamberger's. Herbert and Therese undertook a major building and reconstruction project of the Middletown property that year. They were criticized for spending so much money during the Great Depression. But Therese explained that they were providing much needed employment at a time when jobs were scarce. They also completely reconstructed their New York City brownstone.
Herbert died suddenly in 1933 before the renovations of either property could be completed. Therese continued the work at Middletown Farm. She lived many years after Herbert's death and maintained a strong persona within the family and society.
