Funeral services were held in Big Timber on Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. from the Lowry Funeral Home for Herbert O, Tjaaland, 52, who died Monday evening at the Deaconess Hospital in Billings of a heart attack. Rev. Eugene W. Nilsen of the Big Timber Lutheran Church officiated. Music was provided by organist, Miss Deborah Lowry and Mrs. Svend Mauland, who sang, "The Old Rugged Cross," and "Beyond the Sunset." Casket bearers were Ed Crossfield, Billings; Ervin Overfelt, John Deegan, Ray Beck, Ralph Prather, and Glen Mothershead. Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery.
He was born April 17, 1919, in Big Timber, Montana, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Tjaaland. He attended schools in Big Timber and worked on his father's ranch. He was married to Hazel M. Sleveland on October 4, 1941, at Big Timber. They ranched on the present Jim Fzw ranch east of Big Timber from 1944 until purchasing a ranch on Bracket Creek near Clyde Park in 1950. Six years later they moved to Anaconda, and still later to Livingston, he being employed in both locations on road construction. He also worked for a year on Yellowtail Dam. Since 1964 they have resided in Billings where Mr. Tjaaland has been employed by Ramsey Engineering. He was a member of the American Lutheran Church and the International Union of Operating Engineers.
Surviving are the widow; a son, Herbert L. Tjaaland of Billings; a daughter, Mrs. Mitch Miller of Lewisotnw, Montana; his twin brother Harold Tjaaland of Columbus; a sister Mrs. Ed Crossfield of Billings; and three grandchildren.
