About Herman Schweitzer
Herman E. Schweitzer Chilton Times February 4, 1928
Herman E. Schweitzer passed away on Monday following a three days illness with pleurisy and pneumonia. His death was a shock to relatives and friends, many of whom were unaware of his serious illness. Although suffering from poor health for some time, Mr. Schweitzer was able to perform the regual work at his place of business on Main Street at late as Thursday of last week. Early Friday morning he was taken ill with an attack of pneumonia, which coupled with heart trouble and pleurisy caused him to weaken very rapidly. He rallied later in the day and on Saturday and Sunday were was no marked change in his condition and close relatives realized that there was slim chance for his ultimate recovery but even they did not think that death was so close at hand. He had a sinking spell on Monday morning and sank into a state of coma, gradually growing weaker until the last spark of life was exhausted. Herman Schweitzer, son of Philip Schweitzer, Sr., of this city, was born in Hayton on Feb. 4th, 1888. He came to this city with his parents while still a young boy, attending the parochial and local graded schools. While in his teens he learned the butcher trade, serving his apprenticeship in the meat market operated by the late Sturm Brothers. After mastering his trade he went west to Price, Utah, where he spent a year and then returned to Wisconsin and worked in a meat Market at Florence for about three years. In 1916 he returned here and went into business with his brother, Joseph, purchasing the Sturm meat market. On June 26, 1917 he was united in marriage to Miss Irma Ecke of Hilbert and they made their home in the apartment above the meat market. Mr. Schweitzer later purchased the interest of his brother, Joseph and conducted the business alone for several years, selling out to Anton Berger about two years ago. Last year he purchased the Sontag building on Main Street and opened a meat market, where he was enjoying a splendid patronage at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Kathleen, his father, Philip Schweitzer, four brothers, Joseph of Milwaukee, John of Hartford, Philip of Stockbridge and Louis of this city and one sister, Mrs. Herman Rau. His untimely death is deeply mourned by all who knew him. He was one of those generous, kindly, big-hearted fellows who never failed a friend. He had the faculty of making and keeping friendships and those who associated with him in business speak highly of his courtesy and integrity in their dealings. He was a kind and loving husband and father leaving nothing undone to assure comfort to his family.
