Herman arrived in America from Frankfurt, Germany in 1857 at Griffin,Georgia.
Herman became a US citizen as a minor in July 28, 1870.
He fought in the civil war.
In the war between the states, he enlisted in the Confederates army and served four years with the Georgia regiment.
After the war, he entered the business of clothing merchant in Griffin, GA from 1865 to 1868. He then moved to Paducah, KY in 1868.
He opened the Wallerstein mercantile in the Richmond House at First and Broadway. In 1871 the store moved to 213 Broadway. He united with his brother in 1878. The brothers married sisters.
Irving S. Cobb the writer used Herman as an inspiration for the creation of Mr. Felsburg, the merchant proprietor of a clothing store on Second St. He appears in the following books: "Back Home", "Old Judge Priest", & the "Escapades of Mr. Trimm".
