Fue Hernando un valiente caballero y de gran honra y hombría “alto de cuerpo, bien fornido, moreno de rostro, muy desenvuelto y valiente” que había vengado, cuando aún era mozo, la deshonra de su prima Sancha Alonso de Hinojosa, considerada la más bella joven de la ciudad por aquel entonces, que fue retenida, contra la voluntad de su padre, por un miembro de los Coraxos, mancillando de este modo la honra familiar, pero una vez localizado en el campo, peleando con él, lo mató “muy como varón”. Muerte que no quedó en el olvido por completo, aunque habían transcurrido veintiún año, pues el Manuscrito de los Hinojosas dice al respecto: “A Hernando le mataron los Coraxos en Marta porque había él muerto a uno de los Coraxos, por causas bastante que para ello tuvo e le mató como muy ombre” (Crc. trujillanas: 296). Era un mundo de venganzas e intrigas, de tomarse la justicia por sus manos y de aplicación de la Ley del talión en múltiples ocasiones. Teresa, al ver que sus cuñados no vengaban la muerte de su marido, cambió los apellidos a sus descendientes por los suyos, y de esa forma perennizó el apellido Pizarro, aunque se perdió el de Hinojosa en su linaje. Quedó viuda con tres hijos pequeños: Martín, Gracia y Beatriz Pizarro de Hinojosa. El vástago póstumo recibió el nombre de Hernando Alonso Pizarro.
