About Herod, King of Chalcis
Herod of Chalcis (d. 48 AD), also known as Herod V, was a son of Aristobulus IV, and the grandson of Herod the Great, Roman client king of Judaea. He was the brother of Herod Agrippa I and Herodias. He was vested the rulership of Chalkis, a kingdom north of Judaea, as tetrarch. After the death of his brother, he was also given responsibility for the Temple in Jerusalem, as well as the appointment of the Temple's High Priest. Ananias was appointed by him.[citation needed]
His first wife was his cousin, Mariamne.[1] She bore him a son, who was also named Aristobulus, and who eventually became ruler of Chalcis.
After Mariamne's death, he married his niece Berenice, with whom he had two sons, Berenicianus and Hyrcanus.
After his death the kingdom was given to Herod Agrippa II.
^1 This Mariamne was the daughter of Joseph ben Joseph (nephew of Herod) and Herod's daughter Olympias, who was the sister of Herod

- Herod of Chalcis, who became responsible for the Temple in Jerusalem and the appointment of the High Priest. He married (i) his cousin, Mariamne and after her death, (ii) his niece Berenice, with whom he had two sons, Berenicianus and Hyrcanus.
- Herodias, who married (i) her uncle, Herod II, son of Herod the Great and Mariamne II, daughter of the high priest Simon Boethus; (ii) another uncle, Herod Antipas, tetrarch of Galilee and Peraea.
- Mariamne III, who married Antipater III, her uncle and eldest son of Herod; after Antipater’s execution in 4 BCE, she may have been the first wife of another uncle, Herod Archelaus, ethnarch of Judea.

Herod of Chalcis
Herod of Chalcis (d. 48-49 AD), also known as Herod V, (the Jewish Encyclopedia lists him as "Herod II") was a son of Aristobulus IV, and the grandson of Herod the Great, Roman client king of Judaea. He was the brother of Herod Agrippa I and Herodias.
His first wife was his cousin, Mariamne. She bore him a son named Aristobulus, who eventually became ruler of Chalcis ad Belum.
After Mariamne's death, he married his niece Berenice, with whom he had two sons, Berenicianus and Hyrcanus.
Around 41 AD, at the request of his brother, Herod Agrippa, emperor Claudius granted him the rule of Chalcis, a kingdom north of Judaea, as tetrarch. Three years later, after the death of his brother, he was also given responsibility for the Temple in Jerusalem, as well as the appointment of the Temple's High Priest. During the four years in which he exercised this right he appointed two high priests—Joseph, the son of Carnus, and Ananias was appointed by him.
He died in 48 AD. After his death the kingdom was given to Herod Agrippa II.
