Hiram Melton, son of James Melton and Mary Cagle, was married four times: Mary Barret, widow Nancy Arnold Adkins, Martha Sewell and widow Rebecca Garman (Jarman). Mary Barrett is the mother of all but one of his children. Martha Sewell and Hiram had one daughter named Martha, also. Perhaps the child's mother died in childbirth. Unknown. Also, the cause of death of Mary Barret and Nancy Arnold is unknown. Rebecca remarried a few months after Hiram's murder.

Hiram Melton was born in North Carolina. He was married at the age of 21 and reared 10 children with his wife. Early in their marreid life they migrated to Mcnairy, TN and settled in Enville. Later in life, Hiram was married a second time to Nancy Arnold Adkins, a widow. They were both from Alabama. Hiram Melton's life ended on a sad note: He died at the hands of a murderer. The story goes that he was having breakfast under the shade of a tree in his yard on the morning of September 13, 1966 and was shot from ambush. He dies without moving from his chair.
