About His Excellency Louis-Zéphirin Moreau
Overview
Bishop Moreau was ordained on 19 December 1846. He quickly advanced through the ranks, serving as titular secretary and as chaplain to the poor at the convent of the Sisters of Charity of Providence. He quickly became known as "good Monsieur Moreau". He became the right hand man of the first bishop of Saint-Hyacinthe, at which time Moreau displayed a capacity for a large workload. Moreau administered the diocese of Sainte-Hyacinthe for 25 years and set in motion initiatives such as creating a court for matrimonial cases. During his tenure he founded 13 parishes, 22 institutions, most of which were educational. His clergy grew from 154 priests in 1876 to 203 in 1901. His reputation for kindness and saintliness grew steadily. Micracles have been attributed to him. Moreau's beatification took place on 10 May 1987.
