Mehitable (Rockwell) Hoyt was born in 1661 in Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut Colony, daughter of John Rockwell (~1625 - ~1673) and Elizabeth (Weed) Rockwell (~1637 - ~1676).

Research Notes

Mehitable Rockwell was usually called Hittabel. She was born c 1661, in Stamford, CT. She was a daughter of John Rockwell, who was called "formerly of Stamford" in Hittabel and John "Keeiler"'s marriage record at Norwalk[3] and possibly his first wife, Mehitebal? Unknown.[4]

On 14 September 1656, a "Hittabel Rock" or Rock (?) well died at Stamford. There may have been a mark of contraction following the name. If this were true, she was probably a first wife of John Rockwell. Naming patterns (that John named a daughter Mehittabel) and a gap in the births of John Rockwell's children also point to a possible first wife.[citation needed]

    • she was born in Norwalk, Nov. 6, 1707.
  • They settled in New Canaan, and were constituent members of the Congregational Church there. His name is often found on the Norwalk records in purchase and sale of land, chiefly in New Canaan.
