The ancestry of Niels is problematic. The Nermo site gives Niels Peter(sen) Juel as his father and Anna Sophie Stabell as his mother, but says "meget usikre foreldre" [parents very uncertain].

MAJOR NILS JUUL,f\'f8d 8. Februar 1799, var som Kav. Lieutnant f\'f8rst ansat ved Skognske Eskadron, men havde i den Tid for det meste sin Bop\'e6l i.Trondhjem. Efter Grev Trampes D\'f8d 1832, da han blev forlovet med Datteren Komtesse Caroline, kj\'f8bte han det store Herres\'e6te Rotvold ved Auktion for 15000 Sp. I Carl Johans Tid blev han udn\'e6vnt til Staldmester, senere til Ritmester og endelig til Major ved Skognske Eskadroa (1850) og forflytter nu til Levanger hvorfra han samme Aar averterer sin Eiendom til Salgs (blev ogsaa solgt til Carl Stephansen 1854. Denne store Gaard var da skyldsat for 21 Spd. l O. 15 Sk., f\'f8der 10 a 12 Heste, 50 a 54 Melkekj\'f8r & c. Uds\'e6d: 100 a 250 fTdr. Poteter, 15 a 18 Tdr. Byg og 40 a 50 Tdr. Havre foruden Rug & c. Efter det optagne Kart indeholder Rotvold 1194 M\'e6linger a 2500 Kvadratalen, hvoraf omtrent 800 ere befarede med Ploug & c. & c. Juul d\'f8de 2den Decbr. 1853 og Konen fulgte ham 1856.

MAJOR NILS JUUL, born February 8, 1799, was first employed as Cavalry Lieutenant in the Skogn [Levanger,NT] Squadron, but at that time he resided mostly in Trondheim. After Count Trampes death in 1832, he became engaged to his daughter Countess Caroline. He bought [the Counts] country estate Rotvoll at auction for 15000 Sp. [In 1875, 4 kroner = 1 speciedaler.] In Carl Johan's time [bef 1844] Juul was appointed Stable Master, later Captain (of horse) and finally Major in the Skogn Squadron (1850) from where he relocated to Levanger. That same year, he advertised his property for sale. (It was also sold to Carl Stephansen in 1854. This great farm was then assessed for "21 spd. L O. 15 Sk., feeds 10 a 12 horses, 50 a 54 milk cows & c. Seed: 100 to 250 fTdr. Potatoes, 15 a 18 Tdr. Build and 40 to 50 Tdr. Oats in addition to Rug & c. According to the recorded Map contains Rotvold 1194 Measurements a 2500 Square, of which about 800 I'm flown with Ploug & c. & c.)" Juul died 2 Decbr. 1853 and his wife followed him in 1856.
