Hon. Capt. Micajah Coffin

Hon. Micajah Coffin represented Nantucket in the General Court or State Legislature for twenty four years. Nantucket ranked as the third town in wealth and commerce in the State of Massachusetts in 1830. The order was Boston, Salem, and Nantucket, a mere watering place its glory having passed away. Hon. Micajah Coffin was the son of Benjamin Coffin and Jedida Hussey. Benjamin was the son of Nathaniel Coffin and Damaris Gueyer. Nathaniel was the son of James Coffin and Mary Severance, and James was the son of Tristram the first in this country and Dionis Stephens who came to country from England in 1642. They settled at Haverhill, Massachusetts, and removed to Nantucket 1660 and was one of the original ten men who purchased the island. Sir Francis Lovelace, the Colonial Governor of the Province of New York, issued a commission June 29, 1671. to Tristram Coffin as Chief Magistrate of the Islands of Nantucket and Tuckernuckett.

The above photo of two newspaper articles was found on Family Search.org and depicts the house and cane of Micajah Coffin. Captions read as follows: House of Micajah Coffin - This house was built by Micajah in the first years of his married life, about 1760. Here he lived until his death at ninety-one years of age. The house still stands on Pine Street, owned (in 1948) by Franklin C. Lamb, Jr. See page 64. Micajah's Cane is owned by Mr. Lister Carlisle. Carlisle is the great, great grandson of Micajah. See page 188. These two items were contributed on August 12, 2016, but the source is not named.

According to Wikipedia, Coffin married Abigail Coleman, the daughter of Elihu Coleman, a distinguished Quaker preacher of his day, and they had a son Zenas Coffin, who was one of the most successful of Nantucket's eighteenth century whaling merchants.

Coffin was one of the leading mariners and traders in the whaling industry, and from 1791 to 1812 was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives.
