Philip, the son of United Empire Loyalists Michael Von Gochnat and Eve Empey, was a merchant and politician in Cornwall, Ontario. During the War of 1812, he served as a lieutenant in the 1st Regiment of Stormont Militia, which fought at the Battle of Chrysler's Farm in 1813.
