About Hon. Diana Margaret Johnson
Diana met her husband-to-be in Gibraltar in 1933. She was staying with her uncle Hugh, at the time commanding the RN Dockyard there, and Jimmy Johnson was a subaltern in the Royal Welch Fusiliers on his first overseas posting. Both were lifelong horse lovers, and they met at an Army-Navy polo match. The Keyes' second daughter, Katherine, married before Diana, probably due to a degree of opposition to marrying a man with no UK family, and also the reluctance of Jimmy's commanding officer to permit marriage before promotion to Major. Eventually, from his next posting of Hong Kong, it was arranged for Jimmy to be seconded to be the ADC of the Governor of Tasmania, He travelled back to England and married Diana (in the Henry VIIth Chapel at Westminster Abbey, a privilege accorded to Diana as a daughter of a Knight of the Bath). The couple honeymooned in Spain just as the Civil War was breaking out, and then took ship for Australia.
