On April 28, 1785, George Dent married Susannah Dawson Cromwell, widow of Joseph Cromwell, then settled in Cumberland, Maryland." (Reference Harry Wright Newman, The Maryland Dents , Richmond, 1963, p. 70) This information contradicts many details given by Julia Grant of her family background. A privately printed genealogy, based partly on family tradition, states that George Dent "married Susan Dawson, and afterwards a Marbury (Cromwell)." (Gustave Anjou, The Dent Family, (n.p., n.d. (ca. 1906, p.26.) Perhaps the Dents had ties to the prominent Marbury family of Maryland, since Fredrick Dent named his youngest daughter Emily Marbury. At any rate, George Dent went to Cumberland County, Maryland, was the official surveyor in 1806, and lived in a log house, called the Dent's House.
