Biography Late in 1693 Heneage Montagu’s stepfather, Charles Montagu*, sought the advice of George Stepney regarding the young man’s education abroad. The upshot was that Montagu visited Stepney in Dresden in the spring of 1694 and stayed for about a year. It would seem that he had returned home in time to be elected for Huntingdonshire at the 1695 election, no doubt on the interest of his brother the 4th Earl of Manchester. In the Commons Montagu was forecast as likely to support the government on 31 Jan. 1696 in the divisions over the proposed council of trade, signed the Association, and voted in March for fixing the price of guineas at 22s. On 25 Nov. he voted for the attainder of Sir John Fenwick†. That same month he was given a place at court worth about £400 p.a. He was absent abroad for the 1697–8 session, leaving England in October to accompany Manchester on his embassy to Venice. He arrived in Venice in December. On 11 Mar. 1698 Manchester reported to the Duke of Shrewsbury that his departure homewards had been delayed, his brother having fallen ‘dangerously ill of a high fever’. Montagu was reported to be dead by 19 Apr. 1698.3
