Biography

on 22 April 1617 Jane married Robert Strange. Their marriage took place at Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire. [1] Robert was mentioned as "son in law" in the will of Jane's father Anthony. [2]

Origins

Lucy Hungerford married Anthony Hungerford in 1595 [after the death of her first husband John St John] on the 20 September 1594. Lucy herself died on 4th June 1598 having had three children in quick succesion with her second husband. According to her MI they were Edward, Bridget & Jane. Jane therefor must have been born in 1597 or 1598 & certainly no earlier.

"Heere lieth the body of Sir John St John, Knight who maried Lucy daughter & co heire of Sir Walter Hungerford of Farley, Knight by whom he had issue Walter that died young Sir John St John Knight & Baronet, Oliver that died young Katherine Anne Jane Elinor Barbara Lucy & Martha that died a child. He deceased the 20 of September 1594. She was secondly maried to Sir Anthony Hungerford Knight by whom she had Edward Bridget and Jane & then died the 4 of June 1598 This was erected by Sir John St John Knight & Baronet in the year of our Lord 1615 the 20 of Jul"

In his will [Anthony Hungerford] bequeaths property and money to his sons Sir Edward, Anthony, Giles and John. He also leaves bequests to his daughters Sarah and Cecilia; his sons in law Robert Strange and John Southby and his brother Sir John Hungerford. He also refers to his recently deceased wife "Dame Sarah". outside of family bequests he leaves money for poor apprentices in the parish of Great Bedwyn and especially mentions "Edward, the plough boy who I brought out of Wiltshire"! [8]

"Afterwards Sir Anthony Hungerford of Black Bourton, co. Oxford, and the ancestor of the branch of the family which continued for four subsequent generations at that place. He was M.P. for Marlborough 35 Eliz. and for Bedwyn 39, 43 Eliz. 1 and 12 Jac. I.; and was knighted at Whitehall Dec. 11, 1606.

He married first Lucy, daughter of Sir Walter Hungerford, of Farley Castle, and widow of Sir John St John, and by her had issue Sir Edward Hungerford, to whom his great-uncle Sir Edward Hungerford, of Farley Castle (second son of Walter Lord Hungerford) on his death in 1607, "for the preservation of his name, settled his estate." (Epitaph at Farley.)"
