Revolutionary War Hero.
Major Azariah Egleston was born in Sheffield, MA, son of Seth Egleston & Sarah Church. On April 22, 1775 he enlisted as a private in the regiment of Col. John Paterson and was active in recruiting other enlistments. With Colonel Paterson's regiment he crossed the Delaware with Washington Dec. 25, 1776 and fought in many principle battles including Princeton, Trenton, both battles of Bemis Heights, and Burgoyne's surrender at Saratoga.
On May 18, 1776, John Hancock promoted him to the rank of Ensign. He was with Washington at Valley Forge, where he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. On March 7, 1779 he was promoted to the rank of Major and served on the staffs of Gen. Ashley and Gen. Paterson.
In 1784 he returned to Lenox and on 11 Aug 1785 he married Hannah Paterson (1769-1803) daughter of Major General John Paterson. He served as Justice of the Peace 1787-1808, was a Representative in Boston 1796-1798, and elected State Senator 1807, 1808, and 1809. He lived out the remainder of his life in Lenox, where he died in 1822.
