About Horatio Mallory

One of the early settlers of Bermuda. He is NOT the same person as the Henry Mallory who married Judith Shirley.

Per V.I. Mallory Smith:

Finally found the parents of Horatio Mallory of Bermuda. Capt Horatio Mallory married Dorothy Forster 1629 Southampton Parish Bermuda. He was son of William Mallory c 1548 d 1611 of Papworth St Agnes and Little Barnsby House, Bermondsey, Co Surrey = (1) 1578 Elizabeth Gregory. William's father was William Mallory c 1520 d 1596 of Papworth St Agnes and London = 1548 John [sic! Joan] chamber [Chamberlain]. William's father, Anthony Mallory 1466 d 1539 of Papworth St Agnes = Alice Farington. Father of Anthony, Thomas Mallory 1425 d 1469 of Papworth = Elizabeth Kinsman (scholars cannot agree if this is the Thomas Malory who wrote the Authurian Tales or if it was Thomas Malory of Newbold Revell.)*

Father of Thomas was Sir William Mallory 1388 d 1445 = (1) 1420/21 Margaret Corbet, a widow. Sir Anketil Malory = Alice de Driby. I have several published sources for this and the line of descent is solid. As you may recall. Horatio worked for Henry, Earl of Southampton. Henry was supporter and friend of William Shakespeare. Thomas Mallory bp 1605 Davenham was presented at Northenden 1635 by Richard Mallory and William Forster, DD, Bishop of Soder and Mann (Isle of Mann). (This Thomas was brother of Philip who gave land in VA to his nephews Thomas c 1635 and Roger c 1637 in VA, sons of Thomas.) Forster was from Chesham and may never have actually set foot on the Isle of Mann. He was allowed to collect fines, have use of a boat, and was entilted to a share of the herring caught. He may have been related to Sir Richard Forster who purchased Stokesley from William Eure, father of Anne Eure.

Note: A William Forster, vinter of London, was father of Dorothy Forster who married Horatio Mallory on Bermuda. Hopestill Forster was a cousin of Christopher Gibson who was also a cousin of Joseph Alsop whose father John Alsop of Alsopp on Dale went to church with Shakespeare. Christopher Gibson married Sarah Sale, sister of Elizabeth Sale who was mother of Elizabeth Preston who married Joseph Alsop and of Marie Preston who married Peter Mallory of New Haven. A Sir Richard Forster was brother in law of William I. http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.mallory/517.1.1.2/mb.ashx

(While this is not solidly conclusive, it is as good a place as any to put him. - Maven)

/* Scholarly consensus is trending back to Sir Thomas Malory of Newbold Revel, scoundrel though he was, because he is the only Thomas Mal(l)ory alive at the right time who was known to be both a knight and a prisoner. (Thomas Mallory of Papworth St. Agnes not only was never knighted, he paid a fine to get out of being knighted. As for Thomas Mallory of Studley, no one knows.)
