- Transferred to the Brilliant for the journey to Port Elizabeth.
- After a failed attempt at farming near Bathurst he joined the government service
- He was appointed as the first Civil Commissioner for Port Elizabeth in 1828
- Appointed Agent-General to the frontier tribes in 1834
- Acquired a farm Coega near Port Elizabeth in1838.
- He renamed it Hougham Park
- Became Civil Commisioner of Albany until his retirement in October 1852
