He went on to Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y. He received his B.A. in 1956 and later did graduate study at Georgia State University. He enlisted in the Army and served as a Private First Class in West Germany, and then fought in the Korean War. After his military service, he worked at the Philadelphia Saving Fund Society until 1964, and briefly as a payroll clerk for the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority. With the same organization, he began his career as a social worker helping “Skid Row alcoholics” with psychological testing and informal counseling. In 1969, he moved to Atlanta where he counseled the developmentally handicapped at the Georgia Retardation Center and later worked with alcoholics in a residential setting. He moved to Seattle in 1980 and worked with young people, helping them prepare for job interviews and employment opportunities. On January 10, 1981, he married Elizabeth Elkins King(nee Rotan). He served on the board of governors for the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity at the University of Seattle, and was a member of the Philadelphia Club. His wife died in September 1996, after a long struggle with breast cancer and osteoporosis. He was remarried on January 16, 1998, to Sheila C. Merchant. They retired to the town of Wailua on the island of Maui where he enjoyed boating and hiking, and studying history and city affairs.
