About Hugh Adams
CIVIL WAR VETERAN. COMPANY A, 53RD OHIO VOLUNTEER INFANTRY. Sent home a letter to his neighbor during the Battle of Vicksburg because his wife could not read or write. After the war, he was convicted of shooting and killing his brother-in-law, a "Mr. Wallace." In Hugh's letter home, he talks about this brother in law and calls him a "Butternutter" or a person who lives in the North and wants the South to prevail in the war. After returning home, he and his Brother In Law get into a fight over farm equipment and he shoots and kills him. The judge fined him $50 and released him from jail. Had one child during the War and 8 after.
Married on Christmas Day, 1856 in Pike County, Ohio.
Came to Ohio from Butler County, PA in a party of 22 family members in the 1850s. Nearly all of this information came directly from Cucoo in an interview with Joe Edwards in a mini-family history from 1978. Cucoo marked up the typewritten pages to make sure it was correct, signing each little note with "-Mabel".
