About Hugh Erling Franzsen
Hugh Franzsen, went mostly by his middle name of Erling. He signed up with his 3 brothers for military service during WW1. in 1914. He was the only one to come home again. The monument in Knysna bears the names of his deceased brothers. The oldest brother, Harold was courting the local School Teacher, Ellie Staples when he went to war. After his death she was courted by Hugh Erling and they married, and were dedicated followers of Jesus.
After WW1 H. Earling Franzsen worked for the Victoria Falls Power Supply, later it became Electricity Supply Commission (ESCOM) and he retired from that job after 35 years service. He took a break to serve again in WW2 but did not see overseas service. He spent a year or more breaking in horses for the Cavalry in Pretoria, then returned to ESCOM.
