From 'Sketch by Gertrude Thompson' (Mable Gertrude (Johnston) Thompson 1877-1961) (which is in the archives of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers Museum in Salt Lake City, Utah via Jacob Gibson III 1814-1882) "In a little fishing village of Greamsey on the Orkney Islands, North of Scotland lived Hugh Johnston who married Cecilia Yorston, to them were born four children, their second son James was born November 1, 1836, when he was 16 years old the family heard the gospel message preached by Wm. Petrie, and were among the first in that place to join the L.D.S. Church, they came to America and in crossing the plains the father died near Green River , Wyoming leaving the widowed Mother, her only daughter Margaret, and sons James and William to finish the journey to Salt Lake in 1854. After arriving in the Valley they lived in the 19th Ward."
