About Hugh Levi Lavender

Hugh L. Lavender b: 1778(?) d: 4 Sep 1836 married Jane Hopper b. 27 Apr 1799-d: 6 Dec 1846 (a daughter of Sally Dial Hopper) on Dec. 12, 1824 in Greene Co., Alabama (Alabama Soldiers, Vol. 16, p. 39 and Early Alabama Marriages, p. 49; in FHL Library, Salt Lake City.

In around 1822, Hugh Levi Lavender (and brother John L. Lavender) had moved to Greene County, Alabama, which was opening up following expulsion of Indian tribes to further west.

A Federal Land Patent there is deeded to Hugh L. Lavender of Greene County, Feb. 18, 1825, for Greene County T22N - R5E, the W½NW¼ Sec. 4. In Bureau of Land Management records (see link above), it is indexed as Hale County, which was later carved out of Greene. In BLM Tract Books, which record payment of taxes, it is listed in Greene Col. (Vol. 81, Greenville, Image 222 of 269).

At the sale of Hugh Levi Lavender's Estate in 1844, "Negro man Robbin" -- presumably Bob, a young person inherited from Hugh Levi's father in 1834 -- went with Hugh Levi's widow, Jane Hopper Lavender ($600). Five other people went with other family members:

  • Hannah a woman, and child, $630 / Robert S. Lavender
  • Rob, a boy $750 /James M. Boyd (a cousin)
  • Small boy name not listed $401 / Austin Prestwood (a neighbor and witness on family Wills in this group)
  • George, a small boy $262 / Robert S. Lavender

Hugh Levi Lavender's Probate is in Alabama, U.S., Wills and Probate Records, 1753-1999 for Hugh L. Lavender Sumter Estate Papers, Lavender, Hugh L. to Lawson, James R, Image 593 (the 1844 Sale), via Ancestry.com.

On Image 662 in the same online file, the initial Property/Inventory Appraisement of 1836 appears, stating "1 Negro man $1300, boy $900, woman & child $1200."
