About Hugh Massy, 1st Baron Massy of Duntrileague

Hugh, 1st Baron Massy of Duntrileague Hugh Massy, eldest son of Colonel Hugh Massy (Hugh III) and Elizabeth Evans, was born in 1700. He succeeded his father as Colonel of his Regiment of Horse Militia and was appointed Sheriff of Co. Limerick in 1739. He was M.P. for Co. Limerick 1759-76 and for Old Leighlin 1776. On 4th August 1776 he was created Lord Massy, 1st Baron of Duntrileague, taking his seat in Parliament on 18th December 1777. He married Mary Dawson of Newforest, Co. Tipperary in 1733 and had three sons, Hugh, James (ancestor of Massy-Dawsons) and John, and one daughter Elizabeth. He subsequently married Rebecca Delap from Antigua on 16th March 1754 by whom he had another three sons and three daughters. He had residences at Duntrileague, Stagdale Lodge, Suir Castle and Paradise (Massy) Lodge, which was built in 1776. He died on 30th January 1788, aged 88, at Stagdale Lodge, Co. Tipperary. The Freeman’s Journal of 7th February 1788 contains the following death notice:-

Hugh Massy, 1st Baron Massy of Duntrileague was born in 1700. He was the son of Colonel Hugh Massy and Elizabeth Evans. He married, firstly, Mary Dawson, daughter of Colonel James Dawson, before 1733. He married, secondly, Rebecca Delap, daughter of Francis Delap, on 16 April 1754. He died on 30 January 1788 at Stagdale Lodge, Ireland.
He held the office of Sheriff of County Limerick in 1739. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for County Limerick between 1759 and 1776. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Old Leighlin in 1776. He was created 1st Baron Massy of Duntrileague, co. Limerick [Ireland] on 4 August 1776.

Hugh Massy, 1st Baron Massy (1700 – 30 January 1788) was an Anglo-Irish peer and politician.

Massy was the son of Colonel Hugh Massy and the elder brother of General Eyre Massey, 1st Baron Clarina. He married firstly Mary Dawson, daughter of Colonel James Dawson by who he had four children. He married secondly Rebecca Dunlap, daughter of Francis Dunlap of Antigua, and had a further seven children.

He was appointed High Sheriff of County Limerick for 1739 and was a Member of the Irish House of Commons for Limerick County between 1759 and 1776. Subsequently, he represented Old Leighlin until 1777.

In 1776 he was raised to the Peerage of Ireland as Baron Massy, of Duntrileague in the County of Limerick.[1] Lord Massy died in January 1788 and was succeeded in the barony by his son Hugh.
