Hugh enlisted in the Revolutionary Army at Lancaster in March 1777 in Captain Thompson's company of the Congressional Regiment commanded by Colonel Moses Hazen and Lieutenant Colonel Edward Antill in which he served six years and four months This Regiment was called Congress Own and also the Canadian Old Regiment Notes and Queries 4th Series Vol 1 P 214 Pennsylvania in the Revolution by Linn and Egle P 99 105 He was discharged June 30 1783 and was honored with the Badge of Merit His honorable service was rewarded by the State of Pennsylvania with the gift of 200 acres of donation lands Pa Arch 3rd Series Vol I P 350 Vol III P 702 Vol VII P 662 which the State of Pennsylvania gave to veterans of the Revolutionary War Wing's History of Cumberland County P 99 Hugh and his wife Sarah removed to Stark Co Ohio Pa Arch Third Series Vol XXIII P 581 where he followed his occupation of stone mason On August 8 1820
