Biography

Charter of concession recorded to Walter and Hugh, his eldest son of Balmachy, 8th July 1605 (Great Seal).

In 1618, his spouse was Katherin Macleod, Neilson. She received from her spouse, in life rent, part of the lands of Ballamuckie.

On 15th December 1618, there is a reversion, by Andrew Munro of Culnald, to Hugh Ross of the lands of Ballamuckie, redeemable for 3000 merks; David Ross, his brother, in Mekle Meddat, witness.

At Leith, 12th June 1621, Hugh assigned to his brother, George Ross, a reversion by the same Andrew Munro over Midganie for 3000 merks, which, by deed dated at Tain 27th June 1621, George Ross in Miltoun intimated to Andrew Munro.

From bonds registered, Hay Office, Edinburgh, in 1622, it would appear that his affairs were in a bad way.

Towards the end of his life he lived at Bramshill with his friend, Mr., afterwards Sir Andrew, Henley, to who he left his pictures and books, dying there February 1654, he was buried in the Lady Chapel of Eversley Church (Charles Kingsley's church), where, in his lifetime, he had prepared his sepulchre.

He had sons:

  1. George.
  2. William. Died 22nd March, 1643.

Hugh was succeeded by George Ross, 5th Laird of Balmachy

195. George, fifth "of Balmachy" (Sasine 3d December, 1627; also Valuation Roll. Sheriffdom of Ross, 1644), died 12th September, .1647; buried at Feme, having married Margaret M'Culloch (Sasine 30th May, 1649). George, fifth of Balmachy, was half-brother and not son to Hugh Ross, fourth of Balmachy (whose only son, George, died s. p.), having acquired the property by right of wadset from the above Hugh, in or before 1627

2. Hugh Ross of Kindeace, ‘son and heir-apparent of Walter,' 28th August 1565. In 1607 he is styled 'portioner of Little Kindeis.' He obtained a charter under the Great Seal of the lands of Easter Kindeace, 20th July 1615, to hold of the Crown. He died 5th August 1622 (Kal. of Ferne), having married Margaret Gordon, 'relict of Hugh Ross of Kindeace, and now spouse to Thomas Ross of Risollis' (Renunciation of Easter Kindeace in favour of Gilbert Robertson, 17th April 1650). By her first husband she had,

Notes

To Maarit Birgitta From: Yet many websites state that the Finnish Rosses are descendants of Ninian Ross, Lord of Halkhead, this is probably not true. The most probable line goes through Rosses of Kindeace (the older branch) to Rosses of Balnagowan. This is backed up by the coats of arms Herman Ross (the last male Ross in Finland) sent to the House of Nobility in Finland. He was not granted permission to use it since he couldn't give documents reliable enough. Anyway, the coat of arms is the one of Rosses of Kindeace,

The problem is that, as far as I know, nobody has found Scottish data about George Ross and his son, William. William was born in 1598, but we don't know much about George. He came to Stockholm in 1617 as you wrote, but there isn't any more information about him. Since his father's name was said to be Hugh, one alternative is Hugh Ross of Kindeace, born 1532, died 1622, but I haven't seen any Scottish documents if he had another son in addition to Walter.

Since I used the coat of arms to connect the Finnish Rosses to Rosses of Balnagowan, I have to note the coats of arms of Rosses of Halkhead in Geni are of Rosses of Balnagowan. I wrote about that to the maintainers but they haven't changed it.

And yes, I'm also a descendant of William Ross.
