Hugh de Ferrieres, Lord of Lechlade & 6th Baron of Burford IS NOT THE FATHER of "N.N. Burford" (born circa 1206). Subsequent to the death of Hugh de Ferrieres in 1204, King John Lackland personally arranged an "engagement" for one of his favorites, Thomas of Galloway, with Margaret de Say of Richard's Castle -- the recent widow of Hugh de Ferrieres. In consequence, Thomas of Galloway became the de facto Baron of Burford 1205 - 1206. While in King John's favor, Thomas of Galloway was one of the wealthiest individuals and largest landowners in England. A notorious libertine, Sir Thomas' excesses were so brazen that even King John could not ignore them. Falling from favor with the mercurial King John, the pending nuptials with Margaret de Say of Richard's Castle were cancelled and Thomas of Galloway was stripped of the majority of his land holdings.
